FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS REGARDING VIN
CHASSIS PLATES
On this web page you will find some typical questions regarding
replacement vehicle VIN chassis plates and ID tags
Why does my trailer need to have an ID or weight plate attached?
There are 2 reasons for this.
Firstly, in order to insure your trailer, you will need a serial (VIN) number plate firmly attached to the chassis. If your trailer should be stolen then the Police would require that plates number to fill out a crime report and then investigate further.
Secondly, and more importantly it is a health and safety issue.
Should you lend or hire out the trailer and it is overloaded there could be serious consequences for the person towing the trailer and also the owner.
There needs to be some positive indication of the total weight (GVW) allowed to be carried.
How would I know the weights to put on the chassis ID plate?
Simply consult the manufacturers’ web-site. All the information you need will be there. Take particular note of the axle(s) ratings together with the size of your trailer wheels and the quality/size of the tyres.
The trailer nose coupling should also show a weight rating plate.
What would happen if I were to be stopped on the motorway with a couple of racehorses in my horse box and no plate on the trailer?
I saw somebody on TV with a vintage Rolls Royce on a car transporter without a VIN plate. I remember that the police took it.
VOSA and the Police have the power to seize your trailer TOGETHER WITH ALL ITS CONTENTS if a weight/VIN plate is not attached.
As seen on Cars Cops & Criminals! TV Wednesday 17.7.2008 9.00pm.
In all European countries any trailer usually needs a registration certificate and a fitted VIN plate and weight rating plate. This important documentation reduces the number of trailers being stolen as one is useless without the other.
I passed my driving test after 1st Jan 1997. Will I need to take an extra test to legally tow a trailer with a GROSS weight over 750kg?
Yes. Contact www.trailerandcartraining.co.uk to discuss your needs.
You will be taught by a fully qualified approved driving instructor (ADI) with 20yrs experience towing trailers.
My friend is emigrating and wants a VIN plate on his bike, got all documentation etc and original VIN stamped on frame etc, but wants easy to read VIN plate for bike also for customs etc. Any help appreciated.
Here at Premier Promotions we can produce almost any plate required to keep you legal and get your bike through the MOT test.
We are often contacted by customers who are restoring a ‘classic bike’ and the frame number has been lost. This generally happens during sand blasting and powder-coating.
Can somebody with a Mk 3 take a close up photo of their Fisholow plate on the bulkhead and enlarge it on the computer so that I can see the detail.? I have bought a repro plate and want to know weather the digits are pressed in from the rear or stamped from the front, and I would like to be able to replicate the style of the digits, my plate was missing for some reason!
I have my 'Fisholow' plate sitting on my desk the moment!
The digits are definitely stamped on from the front. It would appear that all the numbers were stamped on at the same time - i.e they are perfectly lined up and equal distance from each other.
I think that the plates on all the cars were the same design as well - so no difference between the Mk I, II & III.
Fisholow plates are available on this home page.
I need to find a good supplier of Land Rover parts and accessories.
I am particularly interested in anything for a Series 1, 2 or 3.
Petrol or diesel, 88, 90, 100, 109, defender, civilian or military makes no difference.
E-bay is always a good place to start. You could also look for a club or forum online. Auto-jumbles and Land Rover 4x4 track days may be good.
I need some help with my chassis plate location. If I can find it.
I was told the VIN plate location was generally under the bonnet on classic cars. Hopefully it’s not missing. Then I can check the VIN number and specification of the vehicle. It would be useful to know the cars history if only I knew how to read a VIN plate.
Internet search engines are a good place to start.
Look for forums that deal specifically with the manufacturer of your car or motor cycle. You could look for ‘VIN plate decoder’ or ‘Chassis Number’ check. There should be a body plate or number somewhere.
